Exposition:
The Narrator was an artist who invited a young artist, a countryman of the
narrator, to look at the paintings. The young painter was in shock to see the
painting of a woman named Alexandera Ebbling and had eyes on it. He examined
the date upon the sketch and asked the narrator, very earnestly, if the
narrator could tell him whether the lady were still living.
Rising Action: They discuss about the sketch and suddenly it
brought back memories. The story flashbacks twenty years ago when the narrator
met Mrs. Ebbling on a ship named Germania. The narrator
still feels that she was very different from all the beautiful and brilliant
women the narrator has known.
Climax: the narrator and
Alexandra Ebbling, after evolving a deep connection during their voyage on
the Germania, confess
their love for each other. They consider running away together, but Mrs.
Ebbling reveals that she cannot because she is ill. Instead,
she gives the narrator a mysterious box.
Resolution: When the narrator, after talking about
Mrs. Alexandra Ebbling for twenty years, finally opens the mysterious gift she
gave him, its box contains a lock of her red-gold hair,
Summary: The story starts when the narrator
who was an artist, invited a young artist to look at the paintings. The young
one noticed the painting of Alexandra Ebbling and was amazed. They had a
discussion about it and brought back memories to when the narrator met Mrs.
Ebbling. She gave him a box and after 20 years the narrator opened it and found
a lock of her red-gold hair.
My Opinion: In my opinion, I didn’t like the story
because it was too dull to read.
(On The Gulls Road by Willa Cather) was bad to read
because of its non-creative text.
